QUALIFICATIONS

In order to ensure that the most qualified teachers are recruited to Taiwan, the government has set minimum requirements that teachers must meet in order to secure a work permit. Although it is sometimes possible for those who do not meet all the requirements to be employed as English teachers in Taiwan, it can be tough. For those who can’t meet any of the minimum criteria for employment listed below, you will not be able to get a work permit. We would advise you to reconsider your decision to be employed in Taiwan. The general criteria are listed below.

Requirements

In order to meet the government’s requirements for legal employment as a foreign English teacher, you need to:

• Be a Native English speaker from the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
• Have Minimum Tertiary Education Requirements
  Teachers must meet one of the following standards to meet the Taiwanese Bureau of Education’s minimum educational requirements:
  1. Bachelor’s degree in any major OR
  2. Associate’s degree with a TEFL / TESOL Certificate. The Bureau of Education does not recognize any other form of certification including diplomas, unless you can prove that your schooling is equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree.
• For those who wish to work in public/government run educational institutions must have a valid teaching license or hold an education major from any of the above six countries.
• For those who wish to teach in colleges/universities must have a Master or above degree in a required major in order to be granted a lecturer or a professor.

In most of the cases, your employer will need to see your original diploma in order to process your paperwork. Transcripts and letters from your university are insufficient. You must bring your diploma. Under the Taiwanese law, only work permits based on a minimum contract term (at least a year) will be accepted.
